Every few months or so, I get slammed by a wave of homesickness. And with it a huge craving for indulgent Filipino (filipino-style) food. This time, it started at Costco, at the frozen seafood section. I saw bag of frozen tilapia fillets. Mmmm tilapia. Even better fried, and none of that breading either. Just plain salt. Just the way I grew up eating it.
And sure it's not the whole fish, but you can't beat the price.
Mmm...
Yesterday, I walked quite a few blocks downtown hoping Manila Fiesta will calm my tastebuds - only to be greeted with a "Sorry dear customers, but we're closing indefinitely" sign. Gah!
So I attempted to make a homemade dish - sinigang (sour soup). But of course, the grocery stores don't sell kangkong (water spinach), so I bought greens that 'looked' closest to it, water cress. For a souring agent, Mexican limes, since they were on sale. But in my rush to come home, I forgot tomatoes. It was a culinary disaster waiting to happen.
But it didn't turn out too bad. Even with soy sauce subbing for salt. :) Just never use water cress - ever - unless you adore a tangy, mustardy, sort of bitter aftertaste.
And today, hot rice and spam. Though I think, original spam tastes sooo much better.
But it did the trick. :) I think the sodium overload of the past two weeks should keep my cravings subdued for a few months.
